Our "Sharing the Love" story for today. Elyse was found wandering about as a stray. She is a tiny little Beagle, of only about 20 to 25 pounds, and it wasn't long before the shelter staff and volunteers realized that she was blind. Dr. Amy Bowman of the Oaks Veterinary Clinic confirmed this and did a pressure check on her eyes to make sure she did not have glaucoma. Fortunately, little Elyse's pressure was fine but she did test positive for heartworms. A wonderful foster for the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter, Jessica Miller, came forward to take Elyse into her home. Not long after that, Rainbow Rescue volunteered to step forward and take Elyse into their rescue to help her find the most perfect forever home while staying with the same foster. Gimme Shelter was able to cover her spay and heartworm treatment which helped expedite her rescue. This little blind dog stole many hearts, and she spreads love to everyone who meets her. It was only a few weeks before the right forever home was found and Elyse was happily adopted into a loving home. She now lives with another blind “fursibling” and gets plenty of love from her new human family. She was spayed last Thursday and is doing very well. Treatment for her heartworm will begin in 2 weeks. It took several “heroes” to come together and give Elyse the medical and emotional care she needed, and each of those individuals found this tiny blind Beagle gave more love than she could possible ever receive. Special thanks goes to Jessica who provided day to day care for Elyse, and Rainbow Rescue who provided a pathway into her forever home. Another wonderful “hero” story of working together to help the animals.
Mahalah is now considered ADOPTABLE! Yup...she just had a visit with the good people of Anderson's Corner Animal Hospital and has been cleared to be spayed. Her spay is scheduled for the 22nd. She is healing well, and progressing nicely. Her nerve function is continuing to get better by the day and she is now ready to start looking for her forever home! This little girl was struck by a car which left her hip and shoulder broken. She has had surgery to pin both breaks, acupuncture for nerve damage and physical therapy exercises in her foster home. She is only about 8 months old and LOVES other dogs. She is not exactly stellar with cats so we recommend no small animals for her. She is basically housetrained, is beautifully crate trained and is just now learning her basics like "sit." If you would like to meet Mahalah and see her utter cuteness in person, please message the page. She so looks forward to meeting you! Happy day! Panny left the building! She headed into a foster to adopt! With high hopes we will be keeping all paws crossed it's true love :)
"Panny" ... Today's Sharing the Love story,
Panny was found as a stray with a severe limp. A kind citizen called Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter to come pick her up. Her rear leg didn't seem to function well so volunteer Howard Holloman made sure she got to the vet for x-rays. There it was discovered that Panny's hip had been dislocated for a long period of time. Putting it back in place was likely to result in more dislocations. Chief Larry authorized volunteer Noa Alexander to call Dr. Carol Attia at Pungo Veterinary Clinic. After reviewing the x-rays, Dr. Attia agreed that the best thing to do was remove the ball joint of the hip and allow the muscle to take over. An FHO (femoral head osteotomy) was scheduled. Gimme Shelter covered the funds for the entire procedure. Howard Holloman kept Panny at his home until the surgery date and Noa Alexander drove her to Pungo Veterinary Clinic for the procedure. Dr. Attia and her wonderful staff operated on Panny and cared for every need for several days afterward. Panny has recovered very well, was spayed at the time of surgery, and is ready for the very last step in her journey…finding a forever home. This Thursday's "Sharing the Love" story is that of a lucky little puppy found by an angel and all the heroes who have given this little darling a second chance at life. On a dark night many weeks ago, Courtney Mason spotted two little eyes alongside the road. She turned around and went back to find a broken puppy, hit by a car and left. Courtney called Animal Control and the officer on call came and found Mahalah, a 6 month old puppy. Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter took her to the vet for x-rays and they found she had a broken pelvis and a broken shoulder at the growth plate. Chief Larry Wilson authorized volunteer Noa Alexander to reach out to Dr. Attia at Pungo Vet Clinic. Dr. Attia recommended a specialist and Dr, Murphie of Anderson's Corner Animal Hospital was called. Volunteers Nancy D'Amico and Emily Glickman got Mahalah safely to her destination. Gimme Shelter volunteered to pay for Mahalah's veterinary care so the surgery could be performed. Dr. Murphie pinned both breaks and is continuing to work with Mahalah through acupuncture and will provide an additional surgery to remove the shoulder pins and then spay her when she is able to walk on her own. Mahalah is currently in foster care, where she is a happy, loving girl while she heals. She currently has to be carried around everywhere while nerve damage heals but she is expected to be able to walk on her own soon. She's a little trooper who is slowly heading toward recovery. Dr. Murphie told the foster family....lots of time and patience is needed as she heals, It won't be an overnight fix. Mahalah loves everyone and has a wonderful, shining spirit that melts every heart along the way of her journey! Thank you to all these angel heroes that have made this happen for Mahalah! 8/28/14 Update: Arnold was adopted by his foster family! We are all so happy for this sweet boy. He is shown here with his new family and fur sibling :) 7/28/14 Update: Arnold Palmer is on his way to Rainbow Rescue. Thank you Sandra Hyle for transporting him. This special boy, or “Arnold Palmer” as he has been so appropriately named is a wonderful example of what can be done when people work together “Sharing the Love”. He has had the help of many heroes and has quite the story behind him. He was first referred to as “Buddy” by many golfers who started seeing him about 1 ½ years ago at Jordan Point Golf Club. He was shy and very thin so the golfers would feed him food from the golf course, and one golfer, Rocky Runner, started bringing him cooked chicken from home. Another of the golfers wives also sent cooked cut up steak many times. Being the smart dog he was, Buddy learned the sound of people’s voices and their vehicles and would look for these special golfers. He started to warm up a bit but was still shy. They dubbed him “Arnold Palmer” and worked at building his trust. About 3 weeks ago the golfers were alarmed to find out that during an electrical storm Arnold had bolted into the clubhouse to hide from the storm and was then sent to a shelter near the golf course. Fearing that he wouldn’t make it out of the shelter, Mr. Gene Milburn (one of the many golfers involved and a supporter of Gimme Shelter) approached us at Gimme Shelter and asked if we could help. We turned to our partner, the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter, for help to see if he could be brought here to the IOW County Animal Shelter. The IOW County Animal Shelter was able to go get him and transfer him out of the other shelter. They housed him and he was checked out by the shelter Vet who also made sure his shots were up to date. Mr. Howard Holloman (an amazing volunteer Hero) worked with him at the shelter to help bring him out of his shell. The picture that you see below is Arnold being transported to the Vet by Mr. Holloman where he was neutered and had his nails clipped. On Friday, Patricia Theo, has arranged for him to be transported with Sandra Hyle from the shelter to Rainbow Animal Rescue Inc. where he goes into foster. Another golfer, Mr. Frank Sturkey, kept all the fellow golfers “followers of Arnold” updated as to what was happening and was instrumental in raising over $250 to help cover Arnolds vet costs. So this lucky boy will be ready to adopt as soon as next week. A beautiful story of many heroes coming together to save the life of a dog. We will keep you updated as to Arnold’s status after the goes into foster. 7/28/14 Update: Arnold Palmer is on his way to Rainbow Rescue. Thank you Sandra Hyle for transporting him. Nicole is a frequent visitor/shopper at the Gimme Shelter shop. She decided to donate all the birthday money that she received to Gimme Shelter, who will use it to help the animals of IOW County. This generous donation was over $65.00! Thank you so much Nicole and a very special happy birthday to you. You are a special hero! We at Gimme Shelter know that it takes a small army of people to make things happen for all the animals in Isle of Wight County that need help. We feel fortunate to be operating in a community that is so generous and supportive.
From your generous donations (and purchases) we generate funds to support many critical animal needs throughout the county. We partner mainly with the Isle Of Wight County Animal Shelter and the Isle of Wight County Humane Society. 100% of Gimme Shelter’s sales proceeds are returned back into IOW County in many different ways. That being said we want to introduce our theme for our 2015 Fur Ball which is to be held February, 14th, 2015. The theme for our Second Annual Fur Ball is: “Sharing the Love”. We felt this was a perfect theme to reinforce our goal of helping the animals of IOW County by supporting the Humane Society and the Animal Shelter to both be the BEST in the state of Virginia. We will be sharing stories with you over the next months of animals that have been helped by your donations and support, and also the countless heroes that make it all happen. |
