This special boy, or “Arnold Palmer” as he has been so appropriately named is a wonderful example of what can be done when people work together “Sharing the Love”. He has had the help of many heroes and has quite the story behind him.  He was first referred to as “Buddy” by many golfers who started seeing him about 1 ½ years ago at Jordan Point Golf Club. He was shy and very thin so the golfers would feed him food from the golf course, and one golfer, Rocky Runner, started bringing him cooked chicken from home. Another of the golfers wives also sent cooked cut up steak many times. Being the smart dog he was, Buddy learned the sound of people’s voices and their vehicles and would look for these special golfers. He started to warm up a bit but was still shy. They dubbed him “Arnold Palmer” and worked at building his trust. About 3 weeks ago the golfers were alarmed to find out that during an electrical storm Arnold had bolted into the clubhouse to hide from the storm and was then sent to a shelter near the golf course. Fearing that he wouldn’t make it out of the shelter, Mr. Gene Milburn (one of the many golfers involved and a supporter of Gimme Shelter) approached us at Gimme Shelter and asked if we could help. We turned to our partner, the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter, for help to see if he could be brought here to the IOW County Animal Shelter. The IOW County Animal Shelter was able to go get him and transfer him out of the other shelter. They housed him and he was checked out by the shelter Vet who also made sure his shots were up to date.

Mr. Howard Holloman (an amazing volunteer Hero) worked with him at the shelter to help bring him out of his shell. The picture that you see below is Arnold being transported to the Vet by Mr. Holloman where he was neutered and had his nails clipped.  On Friday, Patricia Theo,  has arranged for him to be transported with Sandra Hyle from the shelter to Rainbow Animal Rescue Inc. where he goes into foster. Another golfer, Mr. Frank Sturkey, kept all the fellow golfers “followers of Arnold” updated as to what was happening and was instrumental in raising over $250 to help cover Arnolds vet costs. So this lucky boy will be ready to adopt as soon as next week. A beautiful story of many heroes coming together to save the life of a dog. We will keep you updated as to Arnold’s status after the goes into foster.
