The story of Jack ...

This sweet puppy was left tied out to a mailbox in the country in the Northern Neck of Virginia. An elderly lady watched him from afar and when no one came for him she took him in and named him Jack. She was only able to keep him for a while and brought him to the Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck, managed by Judy Harvell & Joyce Page, where she knew they could find him a good home. Animal Welfare League found Jack a wonderful foster in the Atkins family. The Atkin’s raised and showed British Black labs so they fostered Jack along with their purebreds. Jack had a little Shar Pei in him which gave him his block head and jowls.
At this same time Robin and Pete Knauth had been living in the Northern Neck. They were dealing with broken hearts over the recent loss of their beloved “Duke”, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. One day while getting a haircut, a local hair stylist listened to the story of the loss of Duke and the emptiness of their home. They told the Knauth’s that they need to go and see this special puppy named Jack.
When Roger & Elizabeth Atkins met the Knauth’s they knew that they had found Jack his forever home. So Jack became a member of the Knauth family and also the inspiration behind Gimme Shelter, Inc. which is modeled after the Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck. The Knauth’s knew that they had to share and support this mission of animal welfare by opening the Gimme Shelter Thrift Shop when they decided to move to Smithfield, VA. Thus, Gimme Shelter, Inc. was founded in June of 2010. The puppy who inspired this continued mission, Jack, was born sometime in May of 2003 and sadly went to the Rainbow Bridge July of 2015. This sweet abandoned puppy has touched many lives in his lifetime, he was truly special. The Atkins’, Harvell’s, and Page’s remain in touch with the Knauth’s and involved in the foundation of love and welfare for the animals that Jack inspired.
”Because of all of you, Jack can still live every day in the Spirit, Purpose and many Benefits of Gimme Shelter” – Pete and Robin Knauth
