Gimme Shelter Accomplishments through 2014

Gimme Shelter, Inc., is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(3)(c) thrift shop dedicated to the welfare of the animals of Isle of Wight County. First opened in June 2010, it operates four days a week, relying entirely on its sale of donated items.

Major Accomplishments to Date:

  • Has donated more than $20,000 to the Isle of Wight Humane Society to help defray their on-going expenses and spay and neuter initiatives
  • Has donated more than $35,000 worth of goods and services to the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter, to include equipment for the newly opened shelter, animal grooming services, spay and neuter costs, food and supplies, veterinary bills and a 2,300 sq. ft. fenced and landscaped two-bay dog run with memorial brick walk, benches and gazebo which are all part of our "Pave the Way to Play" Project
  • Has donated more than $21,000 to local veterinary practices to help defray emergency and other unplanned treatment costs incurred by needy County pet owners
  • Has provided a $5,000 cash scholarship  each year in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 to a deserving Isle of Wight County student enrolled in advanced veterinary or veterinary technician studies
  • Has provided more than $6,800 miscellaneous cash, goods and services to other animal care efforts (Horses Helping Heroes; PETA; Diamonds in the Rough; pet oxygen masks to IOW Fire Department;  Joplin, Missouri, Humane Society for post-tornado recovery, etc.) 
  • Provides liaison and clearinghouse services for local residents seeking assistance and/or advice regarding acquiring pets, seeking to place pets and/or seeking treatment for their pets
  • Provides donated food, supplies and services directly to needy local pet owners
